During the Great Nordic Migration from Denmark, which began in the middle of the 1800s and continued into the 1900s, more than 300,000 Danes embarked on the journey across the Atlantic towards ‘The Land of the Free’, with dreams of free land and a better life. A large number of these Danish immigrants chose to settle in California, and founded Solvang in 1911.

From 1880 to 1920, approximately 10% of the Danish population migrated to America – and today, California is the state with the largest population of Danish-Americans, topping the list with over 200,000.
According to the U.S. Census in 2011, nearly 1.5 million Americans list Danish as their primary or secondary ancestry, which is about 1/4 of the number of people living in Denmark, today.
The Great Nordic Migration has had a significant influence on American history and culture, and to this day there is still a strong bond between the U.S. and Denmark.
